The debate about funding for infrastructure in America continues to be a hot topic in the news. It is no secret that the highway trust fund is in crisis. With current roads in need of repair and the demand for new roads increasing, states are looking for innovative ways to pay for the needed infrastructure. April 14th, 2014 – TxDot Names New Commissioner
The Texas Department of Transportation has announced a new commissioner, Joe Weber. Weber replaces Phil Wilson, who left to take a new position at the Lower Colorado River Authority. Weber has a Master’s Degree in Public Affairs from the LBJ School of Public Affairs, and served as a lieutenant general in the U.S. Marine Corps. He is stepping down from his position as Vice President of Student Affairs at Texas A&M University in order to take his new position.
March 12, 2014 – Growth in Mass Transit Use
It’s no secret that the United States stands behind most European nations when it comes to not only the groundwork for mass transit, but also the utilization of mass transit. Texas Turnpike Corp. is dedicated to the synergy between mass transit railways and highways systems. We believe in a better Texas, and within that, we believe in making the lives of Texans more convenient. Recently, the Dallas Morning News posted an article that outlines the growth use of mass transit in the past few years. You can find that article here.
March 6, 2014 – High-speed Rail in Texas
There has been talk for a few years about the benefits of having a high-speed rail train connecting Dallas and Houston. The idea met a lot of push-back the first time around, but this time, it’s looking like more people see the benefits a high-speed rail track would bring to the citizens of Texas. February 3, 2014 – Senator Robert Nichols
Recently Lt. Governor David Dewhurst named Senator Robert Nichols, Chairman of the Texas State Senate Select Committee on Transportation Funding. Senator Nichols has been in the Texas senate since 2006 and represents 19 counties. Before being elected, he served as transportation commissioner for eight years. To say the least, Sen. Nichols knows a lot about the transportation needs of his fellow Texans. In an article dated February 3, 2014 written by Sen. January 13, 2014 – Texas Transportation Forum
Last week, January 6th-8th, Texas Turnpike Corp. attended the Ninth Annual Texas Transportation Forum in San Antonio, Texas. There was a fantastic turnout that included representatives from all over the State of Texas. In addition to being able to network with friends and partners, there were several highlights to the forum:
– Prior to the forum starting, officials gathered in San Antonio to announce an $800 Million dollar investment in 3 critical projects.
– We heard from Governor Perry who announced the Governor Rick Perry Leadership in Transportation Award which will begin to be given out at next year’s forum.
– We also had the pleasure of hearing from Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx, as he announced an initiative to complete an environmental review for high speed rail between Dallas/Fort Worth and Houston.
This is an exciting time for transportation in Texas, and Texas Turnpike Corp. couldn’t be more excited about being involved in making life a little easier for our fellow citizens. For more information on each of these developments, click on the links above.
